In Gothenburg we are shaping the new battery industry. In the coming years Gothenburg and West Sweden will have in place two battery gigafactories, with major investments being made by public and private actors, including Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group. The region is set to become an important hub for both battery development and production.
Sweden’s largest energy storage investment, totaling 211 MW, goes live, combining 14 sites. 14 large-scale battery storage systems (BESS) have come online in Sweden to deploy 211 MW / 211 MWh into the region.
It will be 100 percent powered by fossil-free energy and the aim is to supply batteries for approximately half a million electric cars per year. Nearby at Lindholmen, Battery Centre Gothenburg will open on 24 January. There, both industrial personnel and students will be trained and educated in battery technology and production.
Together with industry partners it carries out leading research on, for example, battery materials, energy storage and battery manufacturing. It also hosts the Swedish Electromobility Centre, a national centre of excellence for hybrid and electric vehicle and charging technology.
