Between 2022 and May 2025, India auctioned approximately 12.8GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity for both hybrid and standalone applications. However, only about 219MWh of BESS capacity is reported to be operational, leaving a large pipeline of projects under construction.
With a rise in preference for firm renewable energy, the share of hybrid tendered capacity has increased from about 12% in 2021 to over 49% in 2024 in the overall renewable energy tenders. The report concludes that as India’s electricity system evolves to integrate more variable renewable energy, the case for investing in battery storage becomes stronger. “Energy transition, and the ensuing higher share of variable renewables in the energy mix, is driving extreme intra-day price swings and shortage of ancillary services at the grid.
At the heart of this momentum is the strategic push by the Government of India and various state authorities, backed by institutions like SECI, NTPC, and SJVN, to advance energy storage solutions. A landmark initiative includes the approval of Viability Gap Funding for 13,200 MWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030-31.
