The way has been cleared for construction to begin on a 250 MW / 500 MWh battery energy storage system that will help “future proof” the Australian Capital Territory’s energy supply by reducing the load on Canberra’s electricity network and increasing network reliability.

How does the Huawei Luna battery pack work?

This technology allows optimization of the energy level of the battery pack. Huawei Luna consists of the Power Module, the electronic component and 5 kWh battery packs. The modular design allows to expand the storage capacity from 5 KWh up to 15 KWh with the possibility of stacking up to 3 battery packs (of 5 kWh each) for each system.

Will a big battery power Canberra?

The government said the big battery project will be capable of responding rapidly to network constraints and will be able to store enough renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods. The Williamsdale battery will be developed, built and operated by Macquarie Group offshoot Eku Energy.

How many neighbourhood batteries will be installed in Canberra?

In addition to these systems, three neighbourhood batteries will be installed in Canberra suburbs as part of the Commonwealth government’s Community Batteries for Household Solar Program.
