The developer has announced capacity purchase agreements for the first standalone battery energy storage projects in the country. Dubai-based AMEA Power has signed capacity purchase agreements (CPAs) with the Egyptian government to develop the first standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the country.
The development was described as the first to incorporate a utility-scale BESS in Egypt when first unveiled in September 2024. The Dubai developer is working in parallel on a new 1 GW solar PV power plant with a 600 MWh BESS in the Benban area, Egypt’s Aswan Governorate.
The projects will have a combined capacity of 1.5 GWh, comprising a 500 MWh BESS project in Zafarana and a 1 GWh site in Benban. The projects are expected to enhance grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy mix.
