Due to the energy intermittency from the photovoltaic power plants, various energy storage systems are utilized to allow increased power capacity and stability. As compared to other energy storage schemes, emerging SMES technique is signi- cantly highlighted for fast speed response and high power density.
Among them, flywheel energy storage (FWES), supercapacitor energy storage (SCES), superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), and pumped-hydro energy storage (PHES) have been proven to support large-scale ESS functions with the integration of HRES [ 20 ].
Therefore, SMES devices in future smart grid integrated with photovoltaic power plants are expected to intelligently handle with the external power exchange demands through the joint efforts with each other. Besides the sole SMES scheme with full energy storage scale, three feasible application schemes of SMES should also be considered.
