Gravitricity was developed by inventor Peter Franco, who also produced the first full-scale tidal energy turbine. What is Gravity-Based Energy Storage? Gravity-based energy storage is an evolution of pumped hydro storage (PHS) technologies, which can store large quantities of energy using the mass of water at different elevations.
UK-based energy storage firm Gravitricity will soon begin work to convert Europe’s deepest mine into the first-ever gravity-based battery. The 4,737 feet (1,444 meters) deep mine is located in Pyhäjärvi, ~280 miles (450 km) north of the Finnish capital of Helsinki.
One of the most promising initiatives is GrEnMine (Gravitational Energy storage in the post-Mine areas) —an international project that aims to repurpose former mining sites into modern gravitational energy storage facilities. The concept behind GrEnMine is based on a simple yet effective physical principle: the use of gravity.
Energy is stored by lifting heavy blocks—such as concrete or steel—when there is excess electricity in the grid. When demand rises, the blocks are lowered, releasing energy back into the system. Unlike battery storage, gravitational solutions do not rely on rare earth metals, have long operational lifespans, and generate no hazardous waste.
Our standardized solar power and energy storage products are engineered for reliability, safety, and efficient deployment. All systems include comprehensive monitoring and control systems with remote management capabilities.
