The 2-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) is the largest in Hungary, Switzerland-headquartered MET Group said, deployed at its Dunamenti thermal power plant in Százhalombatta, near Budapest.
The new facility supports a growing push to green Hungary’s power grid. Hungary has just switched on its largest battery energy storage system (BESS) to date, stepping up its role in Central Europe’s growing grid-scale energy transition.
The current storage capacity of all BESS units on site would be sufficient to supply the entire decorative and public lighting needs of Budapest for 4 hours. The supplier of the equipment is Huawei Technologies, the project’s main contractor is Forest-Vill Ltd.
This BESS launch is part of MET Group’s broader effort to build balancing and flexibility-enhancing technologies across Europe. The company’s 2024 acquisition of French battery storage firm Comax is one of several strategic moves to develop co-located storage with solar parks in multiple countries.
