In addition to the wind projects, five solar photovoltaic (solar PV) plants will be built: Bisha (3,000 MW, Asir province), Humaij (3,000 MW, Madinah province), Khulis (2,000 MW, Makkah province), Afif 1 (2,000 MW, Riyadh province) and Afif 2 (2,000 MW, Riyadh province).
The programme includes two large-scale wind farms—Starah (2,000 MW) and Shaqra (1,000 MW)—both located in Riyadh province.
It is provided by the World Bank Group as a free service to governments, developers and the general public, and allows users to quickly obtain data and carry out a simple electricity output calculation for any location covered by the solar resource database.
The total combined capacity of the seven projects is 15,000 MW—3,000 MW from wind and 12,000 MW from solar. The projects represent a total investment of over $8.3 billion and will be jointly owned by Acwa Power, Badeel (a wholly owned company of the Public Investment Fund), and SAPCO (a subsidiary of Aramco).
